The islands of Samoa are situated in the South Seas some 3,500 km east
of Australia between longitudes 172 and 168 degrees West and latitudes 13
an14
degrees South, approximately.
Of these the German colony comprised the principal islands of Sawaii and
Upolu lying to the west of longitude 171 degrees West, with the capital
Apia and two smaller islands. The total area was about 2,572 sq. kms and
on 1.1.1913 had roughly 37,000 inhabitants of whom 544 were Whites.
